What is a solid jewelry design software system?
What works best for someone who is not completely new but early in their experience and using software tools for this purpose?
It depends on the type of jewelry design. If you are talking something that needs to be three-dimensional and structural, probably AutoCad. I've met jewelers who use it. Also Adobe Illustrator.
You can do imaging design work with Photoshop as well. It really depends on what your needs are and what you are trying to accomplish with the designs: are you merely doing design concepts or do you actually need to build it for use in making the actual piece?

(As far as I know there isn't a specific program for jewelry design, but I could be wrong: there's always somebody out there creating programs for niche uses!)
